Maria Lucia of Jesus and of the Immaculate Heart

Lucia Rosa dos Santos, was born in Aljustrel, parish of Fatima, on March 28, 1907.
In the company of her cousins, Blessed Francisco and Blessed Jacinta Marto, they
received, in 1916, the visit of an Angel three times, and six times Our Lady visited
them in 1917, who asked for prayers and penance in reparation and for the conversion of sinners.
Her special mission was to spread the devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary as
the center of the Message of Fatima.
Lúcia joined the Congregation of Saint Dorothy, in Spain, where she received the
apparitions in Tuy and Pontevedra.
Desiring a life of greater recollection to respond to the message that Our Lady had
entrusted to her, she entered the Carmel in Coimbra to live a life deeply in prayer and sacrifice.

Sr. Lucie’s life as a Carmelite nun was simple and humble, with nothing really distinguishing her outwardly from the other sisters, except for her intense theological life which was anchored in the Lord and encouraged by the words of Mary: "I will never leave you. My Immaculate Heart will always be your guide and refuge leading you to God." The Virgin, who had entrusted her with the message of her Immaculate Heart, asked her to spread this devotion for the conversion of sinners and for world peace.

To Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, during his visit to Coimbra in 1996, he affirmed: "The entity, the objective of the message is anchored in hope, faith and love: My God, I believe, I hope in you, I adore you and I love you; I beseech you to pardon all those who do not believe, do not hope, do not adore, and do not love you."

"The shepherdess" would come to say "yes" at any moment, sweet or bitter in her life, and with an ever greater love would she renew her gift given to her on the 13th of May 1917, the very day of the Virgin’s first apparition. This would become the constant refrain and hymn of Sr. Lucie’s life.
Our Lady came to take Lúcia to Heaven on February 13, 2005, and her body rests in the Basilica of Fatima since the day of February 19, 2006.
