Following Mary’s example, the contemplative is a person centred in God. (VDQ 10)

Carmel is all Mary's

"‘Behold, your mother.’ And from that hour the disciple took her into his home." (Jn 19: 27)

The presence of Mary is found since the dawn of Carmel. The hermits erected a beautiful chapel in her honor, because they wanted to devote themselves entirely to the service of Christ under the loving gaze of the Mother of God. They chose her as Patroness of the Order, calling themselves "Brothers of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel", and they consecrated themselves in a particular way to her love and devotion.

Teresa de Jesus made hers this ancient spiritual tradition of Carmel. Feeling driven by a tender affection for the Virgin and Most Holy Mother she tells us: "let us live as true daughters of the Virgin and observe our profession, that our Lord grant us the mercy he has promised us." (Foundations 16: 7)

Thus, in every one of us is a communion and a familiarity with Mary, having her for mother, sister, patroness and continuing here on earth the love of Jesus for His mother.

Mary is the daughter of this Earth, of this village in which we live. In Nazareth it is Mary who awakens in us an attitude of wife, made host and listener. In Bethlehem, she gives rise in us to an attitude of mother who intercedes, that creates in joy and pain. In Jerusalem, along with Mary, we join the fruitful silence of the Word on the Cross. In Mount Carmel, Mary is the "Lady of Place", the "sister" who accompanies us so that we arrive, led by her hand, to the top of the Mount of perfection that is Christ.
